The mask is plastic, but well made and feels sturdy. It comes with batteries (I love that about electronic toys now-a-days!) and has buttons on the side to elicit the programmed phrases. The package says it has a voice changing effect, but this is a Christmas gift so I didn't put it on to try that out.
